Hams’ Caves

Hams’ Caves, located near Porto Cristo in the Balearic Islands, are a renowned natural wonder and serve as a journey into the prehistoric past of Mallorca.

Discovered in 1905 by Pedro Caldentey, this stunning subterranean network is distinguished by its peculiar, formation-filled chambers, each uniquely named and characterized by distinctive geological features. One can explore the majestic Round Cave, an ancient open space that hints at remnants of prehistoric human settlement through archaeological findings. The tour also traverses the Dream Cave with dazzling stalactites and stalagmites illuminated in vibrant colors, tantalizing the imagination.

The caves are cherished for their striking "fish hook" formations, locally dubbed "hams," which captivate visitors and have fascinated countless geologists and tourists over the years. Among the attractions is the underground lake, sometimes referred to as the Sea of Venice, where visitors can enjoy musical performances that enhance the subterranean acoustics and atmosphere. Recognized for their rich history, these caves have experienced different periods of popularity and development, notably during the 20th century when they became a pivotal aspect of Mallorca’s tourism offerings. Their fascinating geology and historical significance continue to draw visitors from around the globe, making them a treasured natural attraction with a storied past.
