Far de Llebeig

The Far de Llebeig is a historical lighthouse located on the picturesque Sa Dragonera Island, part of the Balearic archipelago off the coast of Spain. Constructed in 1910, this lighthouse stands as a testament to early 20th-century maritime engineering, designed to guide ships safely through the demanding waters of the western Mediterranean.

During the period of its construction, Spain was enhancing its coastal navigation system to support burgeoning maritime trade routes. The lighthouse’s name, "Llebeig," refers to the southwesterly wind common to the region, which mariners have long had to contend with.

Sa Dragonera itself holds historical significance, once a haven for pirates and smugglers in the 16th and 17th centuries, which adds an intriguing layer to the lighthouse’s narrative. The island’s rugged cliffs and unique wildlife were declared a natural park in 1995, protecting the rich biodiversity that thrives there.

Today, the Far de Llebeig stands not only as a vital beacon of maritime safety but also as a compelling part of the cultural and historical tapestry of the Balearic Islands.
