Deià
Back to all places
Nestled in the captivating embrace of the Serra de Tramuntana, Deià is a picturesque coastal village perched on the northern ridge of the enchanting Spanish island of Mallorca. Steeped in history and cultural richness, this idyllic locale combines the serenity of lush orange and olive groves perched upon steep, dramatic cliffs overlooking the azure Mediterranean Sea.
This charming village became a haven for intellectuals and creatives after the First World War, drawing German, English, and American expatriates seeking inspiration and solace. Among its most celebrated residents was the English poet, novelist, and scholar Robert Graves, who discovered this stunning village and made it his home. Graves, alongside Laura Riding, established the Seizin Press and used the village as a backdrop for many of his stories, including his acclaimed historical novel "Hercules, My Shipmate." His Deià residence is now a fascinating museum for literary enthusiasts. The graceful allure of Deià also attracted Anaïs Nin in the 1920s, who found inspiration on its sun-kissed beach, leading to her short story set there.
Spanish writer Carme Riera later revisited this narrative, adding another layer to the town’s literary tapestry. Renowned poet and novelist Claribel Alegría lived in Deià, adding to its rich artistic legacy. The village has also served as a backdrop for the works of Uruguayan novelist Cristina Peri Rossi.
In recent decades, Deià has emerged as a crossroads of rock and roll legends. Richard Branson’s Virgin Records has strong ties to the area, with his luxury residence drawing famous musicians to the village, including luminaries such as Kevin Ayers, Robert Wyatt, and Daevid Allen from the Canterbury scene, and Mick Jagger, Mark Knopfler, and Mike Oldfield, among others, who have graced its local bar, Sa Fonda, with impromptu jams, creating yet another fascinating chapter in the rich history of this enchanting village. Fionn Regan’s third studio album, "100 Acres of Sycamore," serves as a melodic testament to the inspiration he found in Deià, entwining the cultural legacy with musical brilliance.
