Carrer del Calvari

Nestled in the picturesque town of Pollença, on the vibrant island of Mallorca, lies Carrer del Calvari, a historic and revered street that holds a deep cultural and spiritual significance. This steep thoroughfare is famously lined with 365 steps, each one symbolizing a day of the year, leading to the elevated chapel of El Calvari at the summit.

Dating back to the 18th century, the current structure of the chapel was completed in 1799, serving as a pilgrim destination during the Semana Santa, or Holy Week. This location is marked by the annual Via Crucis procession, where participants reenact the Passion of Christ, a tradition that draws many visitors and locals alike.

Over the years, the street has witnessed the dynamic evolution of Pollença, from its Roman roots through its Moorish occupation, to becoming a charismatic enclave of artistic expression and cultural festivity.

Walking up Carrer del Calvari offers more than a religious experience; it provides an enchanting glimpse into the town’s historical tapestry, from its architectural styles to its vibrant communal spirit, enriched by the surrounding vistas of the Tramuntana mountains and the authentic charm of Mallorca.
