Calvià
Back to all places
Nestled in the southwestern corner of Majorca, Calvià is a municipality steeped in both historical richness and natural beauty.
This region lies between the prominent mountain ranges of Serra de Tramuntana and Serra de Na Burguesa, encompassing an area of approximately 145 square kilometers. Its history dates back over 4,000 years, originally inhabited during the Neolithic era by the Balearic slingers. Archaeological treasures, such as the Puig de sa Morisca Archaeological Park, provide a glimpse into its early past.
Calvià’s historical narrative is notably highlighted by the arrival of King James I of Aragon in 1229 at Santa Ponça, which marked the beginning of the conquest of the Moors. This event fundamentally shaped the identity of Calvià and greater Majorca, introducing Catalan culture and language, both of which are preserved to this day.
The region was part of the feudal system under the jurisdiction of the Bishop of Barcelona, a legacy that lasted until the church’s holdings were dissolved in 1834. During the medieval period, it was a strategic location, fortified against pirates with a system of watchtowers. The economy, for centuries reliant on agriculture, particularly around the Bay of Santa Ponça, saw a significant transformation in the 20th century as tourism took root. The evolution from large estates, or latifundia, to a vibrant tourist destination created profound social and economic changes.
In contemporary times, Calvià is renowned for its stunning coastline, peppered with 34 beaches and coves, making it a magnet for tourists. Places like Palma Nova, Magaluf, and Santa Ponsa buzz with activity, drawing visitors from around the globe. The town has become a favored spot not just for leisure, but also for historical exploration, offering a mosaic of the past that continues to enchant history aficionados. While modern in its amenities, the spirit of ancient Calvià whispers through its landscapes, a testament to its enduring allure through the ages.
