Banys Àrabs
Back to all places
The Banys Àrabs, an enduring emblem of Palma’s rich heritage, stands as one of the few surviving Moorish structures in the city. Originating from the 10th century, during the period of Arab rule over Mallorca, these baths provide an intriguing glimpse into the Islamic Caliphate’s advanced understanding of engineering and architecture.
Set within the tranquil gardens of Can Fontirroig, the structure primarily consists of a domed central hall, supported by a dozen columns, each sporting diverse capitals, revealing the eclectic influences that have marked the island’s history. Beyond its architectural allure, the baths are a testament to the ancients’ appreciation for social and cultural gatherings in bathhouses, which were venues for relaxation, business, and social discourse. Remarkably, the Banys Àrabs have weathered centuries of change, surviving the Christian reconquest of Mallorca in 1229, which saw many Islamic structures repurposed or dismantled.
Today, visitors can explore this atmospheric relic, contemplating life in medieval Mallorca while surrounded by lush Mediterranean flora.
